Things That Are Keeping Me Grounded

Ideas (from Therapy), Quotes, Songs, Podcasts & More

Happy Friday!

Welcome Back to the newsletter. Thank you for being here.

The fact that 2023 is nearly 25% over is nuts. Time seems to be moving faster than ever.

Maybe it's that I'm getting older, or maybe it's the exponential rise of technology & consciousness?

Either way, with as quick & weird as time feels recently, I've been having trouble staying grounded.

So here are a few things that have been keeping me sane the past few months.

Ideas From Therapy

Finding a therapist I vibe with has been a game-changer.

He's a somatic-based practitioner based out of Philly and I've been learning a ton so far. Here's some highlights of the ideas we've been exploring:

  • The Nervous System is Inherently Connected to What’s Happening Externally.

  • Healing is Expanding our Capacity to Engage with Life.

  • Courage is the Capacity to Expand Rather than Contract.

  • Reconnection to Source Builds Trust & Faith.

  • Just as Misalignment Feels Dis-regulating, Alignment Feels Regulating.

  • Inaction is a Necessary Input to Thriving. In the Non-doing, Things Happen Naturally. We Feel Safe. We Get Out of Our Own Way.

5 Quotes I'm Pondering

  • “There is no must in art because art is free.” Wassily Kandinsky

  • “We cannot escape fear. We can only transform it into a companion that accompanies us on all our exciting adventures.” Susan Jeffers

  • "Water is the softest thing, yet it can penetrate mountains and earth. This shows clearly the principle of softness overcoming hardness." - Lao Tzu.

  • "We are more the conduit than the creator of what we express.... We are the instrument more than the author of our work." Julia Cameron

  • “Look and you will find it - what is unsought will go undetected.” Sophocles

Anne Lamott | Finding Joy in the Journey

Listen to this episode from Good Life Project on Spotify. My first exposure to Anne Lamott’s work was her iconic book, Bird By Bird, which as a writer, was transformative. Not just because it helped me better understand how and why to write, but also because her wonderfully wise and irreverent voice inspired me to be more real, more honest in both my work and my life. I’ve remained captivated by her writing ever since. The author of too many The New York Times bestsellers, including Almost Everything; Hallelujah Anyway; Small Victories; Stitches; Help, Thanks, Wow; and her most recent Dusk Night Dawn, Anne goes places other fear to tread with such humility, humor and craft, it’s like you’ve been invited into her mind, her life and her ability to draw belly laughs, deep wisdom and hits of awakening from those often tiny moments that touch down in our lives that so many of us miss. She reminds you, it may not be fun while it’s happening, but it’s all part of the beautiful souffle of life and every ingredient matters. So excited to share this best-of conversation with you now.You can find Anne at: Website | InstagramIf you LOVED this episode you’ll also love the conversations we had with Glennon Doyle about living more authentically and untamed.Check out our offerings & partners: My New Book SparkedMy New Podcast SPARKED. To submit your “moment & question” for consideration to be on the show go to sparketype.com/submit. Visit Our Sponsor Page For Great Resources & Discount Codes Hosted on Acast. 4,000 Kilometers On Foot: Nedd Brockmann’s Epic Run Across Australia

Listen to this episode from The Rich Roll Podcast on Spotify. Imagine running 2,500 miles across Australia, in some of the most brutal conditions on Earth, in under 50 days. This is the remarkable story of today’s guest Nedd Brockmann. A charismatic young electrician apprentice with a legendary bleach blonde mullet and world-class personality, at just 23 years old, Nedd audaciously set out to become the fastest person to ever run across his native Australia–4000km (2,500 miles) from Perth to Bondi Beach in Sydney. This is a phenomenal conversation in which we unpack Nedd’s extraordinary and inspiring journey. We cover why he got into running, how he progressed so quickly, and the intrinsic motivation behind his trans-Australia adventure. Nedd shares how he grapples with hardship—including his post-run PTSD. But more than anything, today’s conversation is about what we can all learn from his example when it comes to human potential and the power we all have to do amazing things when the mind, body, and spirit are dialed in. I loved getting to know him—and I know you will too. National Geographic photojournalist Ami Vitale was outraged by the Trump administration's plan to reverse the elephant tusk importation ban, so she took action by launching a print sale. The sale raised $50,000 in just 10 days, underlining the power of photographs to connect with people, evoke emotion and inspire activism.

Something about the "XX Lessons in XX Years" are always fascinating to me. This article is a slight spin-off of that concept and is packed full of short but powerful reminders. If you are not a member of Medium, I would encourage it, as it's one of the best places to find compelling & meaningful stories in 2023.

An App That Makes Audio Consumption 1000% Easier

When I visited Durham, NC in December, my friend Josh told me about an idea he was working on... an AI-driven audio summarization tool. He called it Feather AI.

It's now live and the reviews are in... it's sick.

For example, here is the summary that it generated for the Rich Roll Podcast interview with Nedd Brockmann mentioned above. This dropped into my inbox within 5 minutes.

Video Length: 1hr 48min

Estimated reading time: 1min 16sec

Bottom line up front: Ned Brockman ran 3,800 kilometers from Perth to Sydney to raise money for homelessness and achieved his goal of raising over a million dollars. This audio discusses his journey, the importance of being authentic, and breaking down goals into achievable actions in order to achieve success.

Key Points:

  • Ned's Marathon: Ned Brockman ran 3,800 kilometers from Perth to Sydney to raise money for homelessness and achieved his goal of raising over a million dollars. He faced severe weather, pain, and a near debilitating injury but was met with a rock star reception at the finish line. Justin was only 23 when he completed an ultra endurance feat, despite having been running for only two years and having no knowledge of nutrition or hydration. He was isolated for much of the run and he has been dealing with PTSD since his experience.

  • Fifty Mile Journey: This audio discusses the journey of a speaker attempting a 50 mile challenge over 50 days while working full-time. The speaker's preparation for the challenge included strength training and mental preparation, and his parents were part of his crew. Despite physical and mental challenges, the speaker was determined to push through and eventually succeeded in completing the challenge two weeks before the start date. He realized that doing something bigger than a record was more important than any record and flag in the ground.

  • Finding a Way: The audio discusses the speaker's journey of running 1500km for charity and the motivation that drove him, both internally and externally. He learned the importance of appreciating his crew and the kindness of people along the way. He also discussed his mantra of "find a way" and his mullet which he wears to break down stereotypes. The speaker also explained his decision to raise money for homelessness in Sydney and how it is now a cause close to his heart.

  • Ned's Impactful Change: Ned has completed an incredible run in Australia, raising $2.5 million in the process. He then created an organization, Mobilize, which provides homeless people with resources to help them. Noah is now speaking at events and has been invited to the GQ Man of the Year Awards, where he was surrounded by stars and the Prime Minister. He hopes that people will take away from his story that anyone can make a change if they are willing to try.

  • Authentic Success: This audio is a conversation between two people, discussing the importance of being authentic and breaking down goals into achievable actions. Consistency and discipline are essential for success, and external validation is not enough to sustain motivation. The conversation ends with a toast to the success of the other person.

As you can see, it's comprehensive, yet precise. You can get a feel for what any YouTube video or MP3 file is about, in a fraction of the time. I cannot wait to continue to explore.

Check it out below.

Thank You for Reading.

Just a friendly reminder - Spring is coming.
